Tech > MrPEG MP3 Player
MrPEG was an idea I had several years ago before MP3s were as popular as they are today. I found that the only place I really listened to music was in my car so I wanted a way to carry my entire CD collection with me (about 300 dics) everywhere I went. I had just begun playing with MP3s so the thought occurred to me to try and build an MP3 player for my car. Searching on Yahoo! I couldn't find a single link to any sites that were working on the same idea so I decided to build my own.Basic Design
The design approach for MrPEG was fairly simple. We started with a standard PC with onboard sound (to reduce the height of the design) and RedHat Linux. We choose Linux because it gave us the most flexibility in terms of programming and design. Additionally, we chose an LCD display from Matrix Orbital to server as the dashboard control and output.
Source Code
The original MrPEG project utilized several open source projects. You can download the versions we used below, but I would highly recommend going to the sites where these projects are supported and downloading the most recent code. The sources here are several years old.LCDproc - The daemon to talk to the LCD
mpg123 - A really nice command line MP3 player
IRMP3 - An extensible MP3 Jukebox

Here are a few pictures of the finished product on Senior Design day. Everything went great and our finished product played all day long while we explained what we had done to everyone who came by.For more pictures checkout the pictures section.
